Medical Consultation

What is clinical insourcing?

Clinical insourcing is a term used to describe a range of medical and clinical services, which are deployed to utilise spare, out-of-hours capacity, typically at weekends, within a trust, in addition to the trusts existing provisions, with the intention to bolster service outputs and improve efficiency.

How can the NHS use clinical insourcing?

Clinical insourcing is transforming patient care in the UK and ensuring that patients that need to be treated do get treated as soon as possible. It reduces waiting times and therefore leads to enhanced overall satisfaction.

We are all well aware that there is a national shortage of staff across the clinical landscape. Insourcing can help mitigate against the risks associated with this. By addressing staff shortages via insourcing, the NHS can ensure that patients are receiving the vital care and treatment that they require.

What does the data say?

As of July 2023, data shows that 7.5 million people are on waiting lists for NHS consultant-led elective care. This coupled with high vacancy rates are leaving NHS Trusts in a difficult position – unable to treat their patients. In fact, there are more than 3 million people waiting longer than 18 weeks for treatment (18 weeks is the statutory target for treatment). In reality, this means that your loved ones could be waiting over a year for non-urgent care. Clinical insourcing helps to alleviate all these pressures all at once by offering a full-service patient pathway.
